Chairman of Opobo /Nkoro Baseline Development Committee and professor of Finance and Development in the Rivers State University, Prof. Adolphus Toby has recommended the setting up of Opobo Development Board.
He barred his mind on issues of how to transform Opobo noting that the ancient kingdom is entering into a new vista of development as it clocks 150 years by December, 2020.
He pointed out that the unity road has provided a fresh opportunity to transform the ancient kingdom into an economic and tourism force among the Niger Delta City states.
Toby who chaired the baseline committee set up by Hon. Eugene Jaja led council executive said the kingdom should be ready to plan it’s physical and economic expansion so as to meet future challenges.
” We recommended an Opobo Development Board. A time is coming when Kalaibiama and Opobo will join as one in terms of physical development.”
He counselled that the Legislative Council should be ready to meet the challenge by introducing a bill to drive the new development.
Prof. Toby said for now the council seem not prepared but needs to be woken up, ” it’s only the council that can drive this vision. They should sponsor a bill to the planning, development and transportation of new Opobo area stretching from the sand field to the satellite communities.
Toby further observed, ” I was at home this new year and I saw that most cars could not move around. All the council needed to do was to build a culvert on the sand field linking the St Paul’s Church and John Africa so vehicles could park through the Ring road. Our brothers from Iloma, Minima and Epellema will benefit, and new economic activities can sprang from that area.
The University don said once that culvert is done it will even attract the State government or NDDC to run a bridge across to Kalama. We can even site a high institution in that area.”844
