Reverend Theodore Hesburgh once said: “The very essence of leadership is that you have a vision. It’s got to be a vision you articulate clearly and forcefully on every occasion.
The words of Reverend Theodore Hesburgh strike like lightning. Vision is an omnipotent ingredient in leadership. Unfortunately, the bane of the myriads of challenges that has bedevilled the Nigerian political terrain is that of leaders without vision. Politics has become an exciting and well rewarding enterprise where even never do wells are given a shot at the bull’s eye at all cost.
Fortunately, that is not the case of our own Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, the best performing minister in the Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. He has transformed the rail sector in Nigeria crisscrossing major cities of Nigeria. Even those who despitefully hate him can attest to this bitter truth.
The question begging for an answer is: “How does CRA always deliver on every task he is given”. Even as Governor of Rivers State, CRA delivered. Schools and health centers were built in every nook and cranny of Rivers State.
Every sector blossomed even as we witnessed rapid infrastructural development in Rivers State. 13,000 teachers were employed, over 5,000 medical personnels were employed. Children of peasants won scholarship awards and were sent overseas for educational training and various skills acquisition training.
CRA rode his personal power bike to inspect projects sites unlike the political jamboree witnessed in Rivers State today in the name of comissioning 18th century brick and mortar projects.
Most importantly, CRA also did not neglect human capacity building. He made leaders and placed many others on the pedestal to greatness. That may have been his achilles heels today as those who God blessed through CRA are after his jugular. That is story for another day.
No doubt, Nigeria needs a leader with vision like Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi to consolidate on the successes of the Buhari administration recorded so far. His past legacies and experience speak volumes. Just like Rivers State, he will transform Nigeria. Children of peasants will have equal opportunities to a great future without having to know any body in the government. Children and elderly ones will have access to free healthcare as well as tution free schools for the less privileged as was witnessed during the Amaechi years in Rivers State.
CRA is detrabilised leader. Non-indigenes were given opportunities on the alter of competence during the CRA years as Governor. CRA is not that kind of leader that promotes ethnic or religious jingoism. Despite the present dominance of his ethnic group in the present day politics of Rivers, he has continued to advocate for a power shift to the Riverine in the spirit of equity and fairness. This is the kind of leader Nigeria desperately needs.
Let me conclude by reiterating that this is my personal opinion. CRA has never indicated to me of his intention to run for presidency. He is busy with his present assignment of transforming the rail and transportation sector. However, as patriotic Nigerians we must learn to coerce men and women of integrity with proven past records to join the race for the baton. We must also rid ourselves of parochial interest, ethnic affiliation & religious inclinations if we dream for a better Nigeria. Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is the man Nigeria desperately needs!!!
