Port Harcourt Law School Campus In Rumueme: A Misdirected Policy Option

First, when the news wafted that the upper echelons of the Nigerian Law School had approved the request of the Governor of Rivers State, Nyerishi Nyesom Wike to have a campus of the law school in Port Harcourt, I wrote, inter alia, that:

“I commend the Major-General for this feat of bringing NLS Campus to Port Harcourt. But: Such should not be domiciled in the metropolis. But in a rustic countryside; away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I therefore appeal that it be sited in Ubima community of the Ikwerre Local Government area of Rivers State.”

Now, the news reportage has it that the Governor has elected to situate the campus in the former premises of School of Nursing in Rumueme of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. His communal territory.

A wrong policy option.

As earlier stated, the campus should have been flung into a sarene rural region, devoid of noise and distractions. In addition to that, socio-economic development would be engendered in that domicility.

Why Ubima?

In that sleepy enclave is a Model Secondary School with 80% completion, built by Wike’s predecessor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. After all, it is trite that government is a continuum. So, an apposite locale for the campus.

The metropolis is already congested. One of the symptoms, the vexexious unending traffic logjam- which has become evident that the multiple over head bridges can not cure.

Gov. C R Amaechi(as he then was) had an epistemological knowledge of urban decongestion/renewal, which is demonstrated in his Greater Port Harcourt policy framework. No politics intended. Please!

Whilst acquiescing that the Wike administration is not entirely an abysmal failure in infrastructural deliverables, however; one thing is evident: most of his policies are ill- thought out. Such as siting the law school campuse in the heart of the city, an already densely populated hemisphere. A mis-directed option, you .
