THE MAN I MARRIED

My lust for Tony grew by the day. I asked Sarah at the office, ‘how about Tony?’ My friend was shocked on hearing that. I’m sure she was wondering why it was Tony I asked about amongst the three guys she introduced to me? She told me few things I needed to know about him – his profession, tribe and marital status.

Those things I heard about him made me like him the more. I stole his phone number from Sarah’s phone unknown to her and I sent him an anonymous text afterwhich he called me immediately.

I wouldn’t want to bother you with too much of what happened that led to how I started seeing Tony. But the difference between Tony and my husband is that he’s caring and loving. I became jealous of the woman who will eventually marry Tony. He filled the vacuum my husband created before he travelled. My attendance in church reduced until pastor became uncomfortable and promised to visit me at home with his wife. I was not in church most days because I was with Tony. Tony brought out the woman in me and made me feel different. I knew I was sinning against God and against my husband but I couldn’t help it, I enjoyed Tony’s company.

My husband was scheduled to be back in two days and yet we haven’t spoken for once. The trauma of his return was a nightmare to me. The fear I won’t be seeing Tony again caused a terrible fever inside me. The fear of being discovered and God’s judgement was the worst trauma of my life. My husband arrived on the 13th of September and his official ordination was to come up on the 28th. Ordination in our church was a big ceremony and he was obviously going to be needing me for the planning and organisation. I needed to sort out Tony before my husband arrived. I passed the night in his place as a farewell compensation. ‘Tony after tonight I won’t be seeing you again, I told him frankly.’ But he smiled and made a joke out of it.

I took his phone an deleted my phone number from it, deleted his from mine. I cleared all our chats in all our social media platforms and handed him his phone. I kissed him and took my bag to leave. He dragged me back in total confusion. He looked into my eyes and tears dropped down his cheeks. ‘Why are you making this type of decision when I am beginning to fall in love with you Folake?’ He held me so close and before I could say anything I found myself on his bed again. Tony did not know I am a married woman. After that last intimacy we had together, he knelt before me and begged him to marry him.

‘Tony, I am a married woman, my husband is a pastor and he will be back to Calabar in two days. Whatsoever we had together was for fun and not for love. Thanks for being there while my husband was away. I have to take my leave now but I have one special request I want to make. I will ever love you if you can grant me this request, I pleaded.’

‘Name it Folake and it’s considered done.’ he said. ‘Please don’t ever call me again or look for me after now.’ Immediately I said that, ‘I picked my bag and left him still kneeling down.

My husband returned looking so lean and unkempt. I knew he was starved while in Lagos. I greeted him and he answered me casually. ‘What will you like to eat?’ I asked him. ‘Anything you give me, I will eat.’ He said that not minding the fact that he’s still keeping malice with me. Then I remembered the Youruba adage that says “Hunger does not stay in the belly with other things”. I made his best meal and decorated it with goat meat, knowing how much he liked it. He ate like a man just released from the prison. If he’s this staved he must also be starved sexually. I made up my mind to give him to the fullest at the bedroom that night.

EPISODE 20

I woke up at St.Raphael’s hospital and
couldn’t remember how and when i passed
out. Where are my? “i asked my mum and
my husband replied instead, ” you’re in the hospital honey, relax.
i was wondering what my husband could be
doing in the hospital and worst still, why his
face was full of smiles. I’d pretend i didn’t
hear him call me honey.
My husband had returned and met my mum but they couldn’t have much time to discuss
the August visit before rushing me to the
hospital.
The Doctor confirmed me pregnant and the
joy in my Husband’s face held no bound.
Honey, ”are you ok?….. Hold on, David just called me honey for the second time in 3
minutes ? That would be the first time in a
very long while. In my oblivion, little did i
know that he already knew about the
pregnancy. Unfortunately, my husband is
certainly not responsible for my pregnancy. Baby, so i am going to be a father? He asked
almost chocking me as he held me tight right
on my bed. My mum stood at akimbo as she
watched the whole melo drama. She didn’t
say a word because she already knew my
husband was headed to an impasse. How are you feeling?, “Dr. Philip asked as
he placed the stethoscope on my chest. I feel
fine sir, ” i replied even though i knew i
was very far from feeling fine.
Congratulations Sir, you can go ahead and
start buying baby things, the young Doctor joked with my husband. Hot tear dropped
down my cheek as my feelings were
thwarted with regrets and uncertainty.
This is the first time seeing my husband
genuinely dazzled with joy and almost licked
my feet in utter ecstacy. You people would be discharged in a jiffy,
Doctor told us. Sincerely, i didn’t want to
leave. Mama, we would talk about your
purpose of
visiting once we get home but now, you’d
branch to the market to buy some soup ingredients to prepare a delicious vegetable
soup for my sweet wife and my unborn lil.
DAVID. He already believed the foetus would
be a boy….. Poor him!
We got home and the whole serenity looked
vivacious. My confusion at this juncture had risen to the apex. What would my mum do?
Would she break the bad news to my
husband or would she advise we played
along? Nothing seemed coherent in my brain.
My son, i know you’d be surprised at my
visit, “my mum finally started talking with my husband after she finished cooking the
soup.
Yes mama, but i would rather savor this food
before discussing your purpose of visit
mama…. Afterall, you ain’t going anytime
soon, or are you?, David started being uncharacteristically jovial of a sudden.
For once, i felt like turning back the hands of
time… I felt David would have made a
wonderful husband and father afterall but the
whole deed has been done.
My son, i really need to discuss something of great importance with you and i am afraid it
might not be so wonderful as perceived,
“my mum said to my husband with as she
jitters.
At this juncture, David knew that all isn’t
well and definitely can’t be well from my mum’s countenance.
What’s the problem mama? Is papa ok? He
made a a guess. Can i have the phone number
of your pastor?
“, Mama aaked. Which pastor ma, you mean
our head pastor? David asked with much nervousness.
Yes,” your oga for church, “mum spoke in
pidgin. Haba, mama, are my safe? David
asked
almost getting angry.
From my room, i could imagine the worst. My mum definitely has come prepared to end
this fiasco once and for all.
Yes mama, of course mama, i have his phone
number but….
My mum cut in and requested he took him to
the pastor instead…. I have something to discuss with him…..
Jesus Christ.!!!
What’s my mum about to do? Can someone
ake me from this sleep?
Hang on for the FINAL FINAL FINAL EPISODE😊
